原作小説！映画「タイタニック」で共演したレオナルド・ディカプリオとケート・ウィンスレットの二人が、再びコンビを組むことに決まった作品の原作小説です。１９５０年代のアメリカで、郊外に暮らす夫婦が人生の意義を探して苦悩する姿が描かれるのだとか…。監督は、ウィンスレットの夫でもあるイギリス出身のサム・メンデス。彼の監督デビューとなった「アメリカン・ビューティー」（作品賞も含めてアカデミー賞をいくつも受賞）も、１９９０年代のアメリカ郊外が舞台で、現代人の病める精神風景を痛烈に皮肉ったユニークな映画でした。とりあえず読んでみたくて、さきほど原書を注文しましたが英語力に自信がないので、早く翻訳が出版されると嬉しいと思います。(評価の★印は、期待度です)
Subarbian Couples and Dark Sides of the 50sI read somewhere that this book is about the portray of the 1950s--its dark sides, decay and suburbs. And I really didn't know what it meant, so I gave it a try. It is a tragedy. You will start to think of what "American suburbs" really are. Obviously something was really wrong with Frank Wheeler and his wife, April who were suburb dwellers, but it also shows that something was wrong with many people who live in suburbs. I expected that nothing at the end would come out good in the relationship between Frank and April. Yates takes you to the events so naturally. It is kind of depressing or disturbing for me to read this book, but it is well-written, meticulously constructed, and fascinating.
