ドラマにもなりますね

学生時代以来、久しぶりに長大な作品を読み終えました。読後感は満足です。
しかし、やや惜しいと思うのは登場人物やストーリーは練られていて、よく出来ている
と思うのですが、話の分岐や筋立て、イベントがある一定のパターンになっていて、
ちょっと平板で飽きが来る感じです。

首つり（hanging）に始まり、首つり（hanging）に終わる．．．

2010年にミニシリーズ、8時間分ののドラマになるようです。日本でも見られるでしょうか？

This plausible story brings you back to England's anarchy era in the 12th century.

The power relation between the Church and the King in the medieval days of England is enjoyed through the story of building an innovative cathedral. It will make us aware that what is needed to rule people is not tyranny with a sword but the force of goodness and humbleness, which is I think the author most wanted to say in this novel. There are not so many scenes that move to tears actually, but the story unfolds rapidly and is rich in historical facts, love affairs and treachery acts, which definitely keep you to have expectations and thrills that what's going on next.

easy to read

This book is ok. I really did not like the ending though where every man that was bad seemed to have got his due. I wish it would have been a little more open ended at the end. I like Phillip the head mon and Waleran the Bishop the most. Jack was also a very good character. I did like the way Follett killed Tom Builder in the middle of the book it was a good catch to keep reading. Overall it is very easy to read and fun too. A great book for commutes.

What an incredible book.

What an incredible book. Once you start reading it, you won't be able to set it down. I even got yelled at by my boss for reading the book on company time. I've read it 4 times and each time is like the first time. There is alot of information to process so get ready be blown away. It's awsome. Also, if you missed reading Tino Georgiou's masterpiece--The Fates, go and read it.

質・量共に一流の傑作歴史巨編

長年小説を読んでいるが、質・量共に超一級の本書に匹敵する作品はまず思いあたらない。何しろ千ページを超えるこの作品には人のあらゆる感情（喜び・悲しみ・怒り・憎悪）と欲望（権力欲・愛欲・食欲）、そして人の気高さ（理想と情熱・献身）と醜さ（暴力・裏切り）といった要素が凝縮されているからだ。

舞台は中世（12世紀）の英国だ。先王が死に後継者を巡って息子達が戦争を繰り広げており、そのため治安は乱れ、庶民は常に暴力と飢えに隣り合わせで生きることを余儀なくされる厳しい時代である。

これだけの巨編だけに登場人物も多数だが、主人公は石工のTomと義理の息子のJack、僧侶のPhilip、そして伯爵の娘のAlienaだろう。4名には各々人生の目的があるが、それを達成するために苦難の道を歩むことになる。

Tomの生涯の目標は自らが設計した大聖堂を棟梁となって建設することだ。この目的を達成するために安定した生活を捨てて家族を引き連れて職を求めて彷徨うが、これにより家族は厳しい飢えに苛まれ苦難に遭遇することになる。
Philipは理想に燃える若き僧侶で、歴史はあるが規律が緩んで財政的に破綻しているKingsbridge修道院の副長に就任して、修道院の再生と壊れた聖堂の再建に取り組むことになる。
Alienaの運命の変転は4名の中で最も劇的で、伯爵の娘として何不自由のない生活を送っていたが、父親が裏切り者として地位を失い投獄されたことから、弟と二人で無一文で世間に放り出され、飢えと肉体的・性的な危険に晒されながら失った地位の回復に奮闘することになる。
最も若いJackはTomの義理の息子となるが、Tomの影響で自身も大聖堂の建設に情熱を燃やすと共に、身分の違うAlienaに一途な恋をする。

このように身分も境遇も異なる4名には、それぞれに宿敵ともいうべき恐るべき敵役が存在し、時には暴力で時には謀略で主人公達の目的の達成を妨げ、地位と命を狙う。

これらの多彩な登場人物の運命が、Kingsbridgeの大聖堂建設を軸にして、複雑に絡み合って行く様が、まるで大聖堂の建設のように精密に破綻なく描写される。一方で、王と聖職者の対立、王と貴族の関係といった政治・社会情勢や羊毛を軸にした経済情勢もわかりやすく描かれているため、中世の生活が目の前に生き生きと浮かんでくるような気になる。

本書は4年前に始めて読み、続編（World Without End）が近々出版されるためその前に再読した次第であるが、改めて稀に見る傑作だと再認識した。これだけの傑作の続編がどのような作品に仕上がっているか期待と不安が入り混じった気持ちだ。
